(OMMA) Oregon Medical Marijuana Act Basics

The Oregon Medical Marijuana Act (ORS 475.300 to 475.346) allows qualified patients to use marijuana to mitigate the symptoms or effects of their debilitating condition. Patients may cultivate their own marijuana, designate someone else to be their caregiver and/or designate a person responsible for their grow-site.

Qualifying medical conditions include:

  • Cancer

  • Glaucoma

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Severe pain

  • Severe nausea

  • Seizures

  • Persistent muscle spasm

  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome, severe lack of appetite)

  • Patients with any of the above conditions must have valid written documentation from their attending physician stating that the person has been diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition and that the medical use of marijuana may mitigate the symptoms or effects of the person's debilitating medical condition in order to be protected under OMMA. Once a patient has obtained such documentation, he or she may apply to the Oregon Health Division to obtain an OMMA Registration Card.

NOTE: Always consult your Professional Health Care Practitioner before using marijuana as medicine. Consult your attorney for any legal advice concerning the use of medical marijuana.
